Walkthrough

This pull request adds snapshot comparison through a Python API and dstrack diff. It compares schema, dataset metrics, and column statistics. It adds severity and distribution-shift results, snapshot-reference resolution, terminal output, optional PDF reports, sample-data commands, tests, and documentation.

Changes: Snapshot comparison

Layer / File(s) Summary
Diff model and comparison engine
src/dstrack/diff/*, src/dstrack/errors.py, src/dstrack/snapshot/_version.py, docs/decisions/0004-diff-semantics-and-severity.md, tests/test_diff_engine.py, docs/API/diff.md
Defines diff data types, severity thresholds, snapshot extraction, schema and metric comparisons, and numeric and text distribution-shift measurements. The engine rejects unsupported recorded snapshot versions and serializes results as JSON-compatible data.
Snapshot lookup and CLI flow
src/dstrack/store.py, src/dstrack/cache.py, src/dstrack/_resolve.py, src/dstrack/_cli.py, src/dstrack/_diff.py, src/dstrack/_log.py, tests/test_diff_resolve.py, tests/test_diff_cli.py, tests/test_log.py
Adds snapshot reads, prefix lookup, reference and pair resolution, and the diff CLI command. The log command now uses shared index and target-resolution helpers.
Terminal comparison output
src/dstrack/console.py, src/dstrack/_diff_render.py, tests/test_diff_render.py
Adds compact comparison output and layouts that adapt to terminal width. It includes snapshot identity, schema changes, metrics, column statistics, distribution shifts, and a summary.
Optional PDF comparison report
pyproject.toml, src/dstrack/_diff_report.py, tests/test_diff_report.py
Adds the optional report dependency and PDF output for comparison details. ReportLab loads when report generation is requested.
Sample data and feature documentation
.gitignore, README.md, docs/getting_started.md, docs/index.md, docs/roadmap.md, sample_data.py, pyproject.toml
Adds commands for creating and modifying sample CSV data. Documents comparison workflows and report output. Updates feature and roadmap text, and ignores .dstrack/.

Convert tuple fields to lists in to_dict.

to_dict() returns tuples for columns, metrics, and nested collections, despite promising lists. Python callers therefore get a different structure after a JSON round-trip. Convert tuples recursively before returning the dictionary.

fields, to lists before returning it. Preserve the existing conversion of other
values.

Allow oversized table rows to span pages.

883-887: Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Reject negative histogram counts before computing PSI.

A histogram with counts [-1, 2] passes validation. Against positive counts on the same grid, it causes a math-domain error instead of using the percentile fallback or reporting an unavailable distribution.

Keep overflowed comparison results JSON-safe.

When a mean changes from -1e308 to 1e308, the delta overflows to infinity. The --json output then contains Infinity, which strict JSON consumers reject. Handle overflowed derived values before serialization, including percentile-shift scores.

both sides' top values **plus a synthetic bucket carrying the untracked tail**

Clarify what the tail bucket detects.

If the top-value shares and coverage stay unchanged, replacing every untracked category still produces a TVD of zero. The bucket records tail mass, not its composition.

Suggested fix

Clarify the synthetic tail bucket’s limitation in the diff-semantics
documentation: state that it detects changes in aggregate tail mass, but not
tail-composition changes when tail mass and top-value shares remain unchanged.

Show reorder and requested details for identical comparisons.

A pure column reorder sets identical but still records the reordered columns. The early return hides that note. It also ignores --all for unchanged snapshots. Preserve the concise output when appropriate, but render the reorder note and requested unchanged details.

Update the `diff.identical` early-return path so it does not discard recorded

and unchanged details when they do.

Render set membership changes in terminal output.

When a column joins constant_columns or high_null_columns, the terminal report omits that change even though it causes a warning. A set-only change can also produce “No column changed materially.” Render the affected sets and members, and account for them in the summary.

Use fonts that cover user-derived text.

When dataset names, column names, or categories contain CJK characters, the PDF can replace them with missing-glyph symbols. This makes the comparison difficult to interpret. Use fonts that cover the characters in these fields.

Set the header Paragraph text color to white.

ReportLab draws each header Paragraph using its own color, so the table’s TEXTCOLOR does not override kit.cell. Headers render dark text on the purple background, reducing readability. Give header Paragraphs a white text color.

Update the header Paragraph styling used by kit.cell so header text is
explicitly white; the table-level TEXTCOLOR setting does not affect
Paragraph-owned text color. Keep the existing purple header background and other
cell styling unchanged.

Preserve zero-width bin counts during redistribution.

When a source bin has equal edges, the overlap guard skips its count before the fallback can assign it. For edges [0, 0, 1] and counts [10, 90], this can produce a zero PSI against a different distribution. Assign the count to a containing bucket or reject the histogram for PSI.

Update the redistribution logic around the overlap guard so zero-width source

Fix the clock for both CLI invocations.

Check the exact types of the serialized values.

Assert that an unchanged column appears with show_unchanged.

Both columns in _changed_diff() change. If column filtering ignores show_unchanged, extra dataset metric rows still make this assertion pass. Add an unchanged column and assert that its name and statistics appear only when show_unchanged=True.

Update the roadmap note to reflect snapshot comparison.

The note says snapshot comparison is planned, but dstrack diff is available now. This can discourage visitors from using the command. Update the note to distinguish available snapshot comparison from planned working-file comparison and CI drift checks.

Calculate the next ID before dropping rows.

When all three rows in a sample are dropped, the new rows reuse IDs 1–3. A reader comparing the sample files can mistake new records for the old records. Calculate next_id from the original rows before removing any.

Preserve measurements within tolerance.

With the default tolerance, a row count change from 1,000 to 1,001 produces zero for both MetricDiff.delta and summary.row_delta. Reports therefore omit the row change. Compute the measurements independently of the severity classification.

Normalize top values using coverage when row counts are missing.

When num_rows is missing, the fallback gives top values total mass one and then adds the untracked tail. This can produce a TVD above one and an incorrect severity. Scale the top-value shares by top_values_coverage when it is available.

Keep the tail bucket separate from category strings.

When a category is "\x00other", the tail share overwrites its probability. Comparing a column containing only that category with one containing only "A" reports TVD as 0.5 instead of 1.0. Use a non-string sentinel or store the tail share separately.

Review comment at @src/dstrack/diff/_engine.py at line 1038:
Keep the tail share separate from category-string keys in the code that builds
shares, so a category equal to _OTHER_BUCKET cannot have its probability
overwritten. Use a non-string sentinel or store the tail share separately, and
preserve its contribution to the TVD calculation.

Reject negative counts before calculating TVD.

If top_values contains a negative count, the engine can report a TVD above its documented maximum of 1. For example, {'A': -1000, 'B': 1100} versus {'B': 100} produces 10 for 100-row snapshots. Mark the distribution unmeasurable instead of calculating a score.

Review comment at @src/dstrack/diff/_extract.py around lines 280 - 282:
Update the distribution parsing around `parsed = number(raw)` to detect any
negative count and mark the distribution unmeasurable before TVD is calculated.
Preserve nonnegative counts and ensure the negative-count case cannot proceed to
scoring.
